Poetry Contest: St. Valentine's Day 2018 Winners

Guidelines for the annual Poetry Contest at Manor College

Words - Student Winner

Because Words,
Words are futile
Give me more
Give me your stutters
Give me your gasp while you splatter your heart out.
Let the air I inhale absorb the hush of your sultry breaths
Give me your despairs, your disappointments, your sighs
Let the thrust of the silence of your truth barge against my walls
Let our orbits intertwined. Let our worlds collide.
Burn all your bridges down and let me swim across
Don't just look me in the eye and recite a lie
Let me in through your glassy iris.
For they remind me just how beautiful broken things are.
Lend me your soul
Let me fathom your poetry. Let me try.
Let me touch you without touching you
Let me say things without telling you
Let your pain go
Let my love stay
Let me let you in tonight
And let me hear everything you don't speak about.
Let me love you.
Because words, words are futile.
We love the things that go unsaid
In the silence
When our eyes speak
Words are futile
I want your hands to touch me
The same way your eyes do
Words are futile
Baby, I remember your touch,
Even on days, when I can't remember my own name
Words are futile
Once upon a time
You were but a dream
And I was afraid to wake up
This time
You are still in my dreams
But I am unafraid;
Your eyes remind me
I can have the best of both worlds
Words are futile
So why do they mean so much to us?

Three Poems - Student Honorable Mention

A letter to the next lover:

I've probably already warned you.

He knows he's trouble and I'm to explain.

Why am I writing this to you?

Cause he destroys.

Not just the heart, but the soul and mind.

Let me explain.

I made myself at home in his heart.

And he in mine, in the deepest corner.

So don't think you won him

cause you're sleeping in his bed,

Meanwhile he's sleeping on a couch in my heart.

There used to be pictures of me on his phone,

I wonder if he threw them into the abyss like my home.

Why don't you go through his phone?

And let me know?

Watch as I still linger, his inability to let go, made clear the further you fall.

He’ll leave the door open for you and the windows cracked in the slightest.

Me?

He keeps my door chained, and my windows locked.

I’m slowly decaying away in my home.

His lips are oxygen, you haven’t known that yet.

You haven’t known the feeling of being stripped of everything yet given everything at the same time.

Of how life rushes back into you as his hands follow a familiar path across your body.

Of how his whispers and whimpers are melodies in your ear.

Just watch what you listen to.

His soul flirts with the devil.

Be careful, the devil is seduced.

A Rose's Song

You've never been one to keep your promises.

But you've warned me of it,

Of your constant inconsistency.

But can I really blame your inconsistency when you're constant with your routine?

Your attention is limited.

While you water all your roses,

You only sing to one at a time.

You sing to the ones with broken hearts,

In hopes that you heal them,

Which you do, in time.

Your voice floats to the next wilted rose,

Fixing one while breaking others.

Of all the red roses in your garden,

I'm the only white rose.

I've caught your eye plenty of times

Maybe I remind you of your inconsistency

Maybe because I'm untainted of your song

Even then, you still sing.

I've found more serenity in the instrumental rather than your vocals.

While your voice revives wilted petals,

The strings of your song only feed my roots, strengthening me for the next time your attention is on me.

Till the next time you keep your promise.

A love like this

You.

I dreamt of you in another lifetime.

Of the way you caressed me,

Of the way you whispered things to me,

Of the way your lips touched me.

I used to dream of a love like this,

Of a love from you.

Me?

You've dreamt of me?

Of the way I let you hold me,

Of the way I patiently listen to you,

Of the way I embraced you?

You've dreamt of a love like this,

Of a love from me?

I don't believe it.

You were so quick to leave,

When things fell apart in your life

Without giving me a chance to help.

You expect me to break myself fixing your broken pieces but how can I do that when there is nothing else to break?

You worked through my thorns,

just to sleep in my petals.

Once you ripped each delicate petal,

you snaked on to the next rose.

Poor rose didn't see it coming

but that's how you work.

You prey on the weak,

Yet you're the weakest of them all.

How could've I dreamt of a love like this?

Of a love from the weakest?

Of a love that takes but never gives?

It was never love nor a dream,

But rather a warning and a nightmare.

FIVE FINGERS - Staff/Faculty Winner

FIVE FINGERS

ENTWINED

A DREAM

LOST TO TIME

YESTERDAY LEFT BEHIND

A SIMPLE HOPE

OF A PIECE OF MIND

TIME PASSES

WINTERS...

SPRINGS...

SUMMERS AND FALLS

ON THE EDGE OF TIME

LIKE A BOOK UNREAD

PAGES NOT TURNED OF A LIFE UNWIND

THE CLOCK

WITH ITS HANDS OF TIME

DREAMING

HOPING

NEVER TOUCHING

A POURED GLASS OF WINE

REACHING FOR

FIVE FINGERS

ENTWINED

Faith, Hope + Love – A Wedding Prayer - Staff/Faculty Honorable Mention

I couldn't think of what to say on this momentous day.

You mean so much to me for so long and I can't forget to say.

How time is such a fleeting thing and the time I've spent with you,

is etched upon my mind in a way that is so true.

Refrain

Because the life we lead is the only one,

And in the end it's love that matters, when all is said and done.

So remember that you mean the world to me when things may not seem great,

when the road gets rocky and the future seems precariously left to fate.

It's then I hope that you will feel my tenderness for you,

And know that you are always in my heart no matter what we do.

Refrain

Because the life we lead is the only one,

And in the end it's love that matters, when all is said and done.

So let me convince you that the best is yet to come,

In many ways we know this but when all is said and done.

We have each other and should count our blessings every day,

and be grateful for the ones we love and the times along the way.

Refrain

Because the life we lead is the only one,

And in the end it's love that matters, when all is said and done.

So have faith in me and ours will be a long and happy life,

Full of family, friends, and hopefully free of strife.

So this is my prayer to you, my wonderful true love,

That you will live as long as me with grace from high above,

And know that you are loved by me and in a special way,

For eternity and even more, on this special day.
