Courses at Manor

Interested students can take the following Ukrainian language courses for 3 credits each:

UK101-102 Elementary Ukrainian I and II

Basic Ukrainian conversation courses designed to lay a firm foundation for subsequent Ukrainian courses. Emphasis will be placed on grammar, pronunciation, and conversation, with some reading and writing. Individual participation encouraged.

UK201-202 Intermediate Ukrainian I and II

For students who wish to further develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening to Ukrainian. Readings drawn from a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction works on topics of general interest. In addition, students are introduced to the Ukrainian world, its peoples, and their cultures. Prerequisite: UK 102 or placement into UK201 or UK202.

UK203 Independent Study

Offered to students who desire to pursue more intensive study of the Ukrainian language beyond the introductory levels, especially with the purpose of developing conversational and translation skills. Work will include readings from Ukrainian literature. Prerequisite: Approval from Chairperson of Liberal Arts Division.

Note: Current Manor College students must obtain approval before taking a course for credit at another institution. According to the College Catalog, "approval will be granted for extenuating circumstances only." If you are hoping to take a language course for credit at another college, please speak with your advisor to confirm whether this is possible before registering for any courses. Critical Language Scholarship Program
The Critical Language Scholarship is a scholarship program from the U.S. Department of State. The scholarship covers eight weeks of intensive summer classes and cultural activities abroad, as well as housing and a stipend for food and essentials. There are fifteen languages offered, including Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Portuguese, Hindi, and Swahili. For help putting your application together, see a library staff member.
Montgomery County Community College
Offers courses in American Sign Language, Chinese, English (as a second language), French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.
Community College of Philadelphia
Offers courses in Arabic, American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Swahili.
Middlebury Language Schools
The Middlebury Language Schools are an eight-week summer immersion program; participants sign a "language pledge" promising to only speak their target language throughout the program. There are twelve languages offered, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. There are a number of full and partial scholarships and need-based grants available.
Penn Language Center
The Penn Language Center offers a large selection of languages. During the school year, you have to be a Penn student to register for courses. However, they typically offer a few languages over the summer, and visiting students can sign up for these individually.
