Tribute to Gloria Casarez, located at 204 S 12th St in Center City, honors the first director of the Philadelphia Mayor's Office for LGBT Affairs. Under Casarez's leadership, Philadelphia established more comprehensive legal protections for LGBT people than any other city in the country. She also advocated for AIDS awareness in lesbian and gay Latino communities, housing rights, and economic justice. Today, the Gloria Casarez Residence, named for her, provides affordable housing for LGBT young adults experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless.
