Library Guide for Diversity, Inclusion and Awareness: Race, Ethnicity, Nationality: Hispanic/ Latinx

This Guide has been created to shed light on the many resources available to students both in the Library and online that focus on the needs and challenges of current students.

The mural Sembrano Sueños, Cosechando Esperanzas is painted on the Esperanza Academy Charter School in North Philly. Many of the students at the school have families originating from Central and South America, and the mural incorporates images of plants and animals from these regions. The mural is intended to cultivate a sense of identity and community among Esperanza students. Read more about this mural here.

Hispanic and Latinx

You'll often see the term Hispanic used interchangeably with Latinx/Latina/Latino (see the article "Unpacking Latinx" for more information about the word Latinx). However, the terms actually mean different things. To learn the difference, check out this short comic by artist Terry Blas.

To make a long story short, some people may consider themselves to be Hispanic but not Latinx, while others may be Latinx but not Hispanic. When in doubt, you can ask people how they like to be identified, which may be a specific country of origin or ancestry (i.e., Mexican/Mexican American, Brazilian/Brazilian American, Haitian/Haitian American).
